Volunteering at The Church on the Slab was a wonderful experience! I made scrambled eggs and
served what seemed like an endless line of hungry people. I knew there was a need in our area
but was surprised by how great it really is. The people not only received a hot meal but the
message of Jesus Christ, which they are so desperately in need of. I left with a sense of
purpose, knowing that I would definitely be back to serve again! - Chrissa
Making the decision to go to work at the Church on the Slab took me several days of "thinking
about it" before I said yes. To be honest, I was nervous because I'd never known or spoken to a
homeless person. They were just "homeless", not people. My eyes were opened as they all talked
with me, smiled at me, and laughed. They became very real people with emotions and problems,
just like me. It warmed my heart to know that I helped give them something warm to eat, maybe
the only meal they would eat that day. They were very appreciative, and that alone will motivate
me to go work there again and again. - Paula
I worked in the kitchen and in the serving line. It was definitely a humbling experience. It gave me
a new perspective on life and how much I have to be thankful for. - WM
I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these

There is something special about giving your time and your smiles to people who are truly in need.
It's so easy to take every day comforts for granted. Never have I felt closer to God. - Valerie

I started working at the Church on the Slab in November. I went with some friends the day
after Thanksgiving. We had all had it on our hearts to go. If it hadn't been for God putting
it on all our hearts, Cherryll would have had no one to help her that weekend. Since then when
I put together the "Girlfriends on a Mission" and we were working other missions in the
community, God kept telling me to go back to the Slab. So that is where we are focusing our
mission right now.
Our goal with Girlfriends on a Mission right now is to help rebuild (building wise) and "staff
with volunteers " so the Slab can continue to bless the community of men, women and
children that need our help. These people I have hugged, spoke to, encouraged, fed and
cared for. They in return have blessed my life in a way I can't describe. I have such
a passion to reach God's people and just love them, and I get so much in return. Everyone
should take a little time out of their personal time and just spend a little bit of it serving
someone you do not know. God will truly not make it a waste of your time. I promise!
Matthew 25:40 "The king will reply, "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the
least of these brothers of mine, you did for me". - Christy Stich "Girlfriends on a Mission"
Let me start by saying The Staff at the Slab are doing great things with a shoestring budget,
a rotating group of volunteers and the kindness of strangers. My first time volunteering at
The Slab, I was moved to looking beyond my own problems and seeing how small they were
compared to many. I came to two realizations. One, the people that I met there could have
been my neighbor, a friend, even a family member. I realized while they might not have been
mine, they were to someone. And two, (allow me to paint a picture) I was in my everyday
attire. Worn in workboots, faded jeans, a hoodie under a Carhart jacket and a ball cap.
My line of work brings me home quite dirty at times. The only difference between myself
and many of the folks I was sitting with during service at The Slab was I had the means to
shower prior to going, the means to prepare a breakfast in my home prior to going, and the
means to fill up the tank and drive to The Slab. I realized that my circumstances allowed me
that blessing. I also realized that circumstances can change and ALL of us are a chain of
events away from needing help ourselves. I know that if I ever found myself in a position
where I was the one needing help, I would hope there was someone who cared enough to do so.
The feelings and the blessings I get from going to The Slab are without measure. Knowing
that I was able to help someone on their journey, even for a brief moment gives back to me
Tenfold. A kind word, a concerned ear, a hot meal, a change of clothes, a pair of shoes without
Holes, such small things that carry such weight in peoples lives. Those of us that have and can,
should share our blessings and do something, anything. I'll be going back to The Slab again.
Hope to see you there. - Kevin
